Philosophy And Ethics A-Level?

Does anyone here take Philosophy And Ethics i.e Religious Education for A-Level...?

I chose it for next year and generally would like to know more about it. Seems interesting enough, but would love input from someone who has already taken it

Anyone?...

I did Religious Education: Christian Theology and Ethics. Although it can be reallllllllllly long studying alllll the different critical and positive approaches to an ethical theory such as: Absolutivism, Natural Law etc. It can give a much wider understanding and then helps on other studies. It is really interesting if you like that sorta thing. In my class there was one half who were completely bored and thus failed because they had no interest in the subject and the other half found it interesting and did well.

If you don't know much about it then why did you choose it?

Our course was split in two sections

(simply) Biblical Studies which is the Christian Theology part and examines gospel comparison, 1st Century Palestine etc.

and other section was Ethics (in the exam) questions would be asking "give key features of *insert ethical theory here*" and the second question would be "how would a (for example) moral relativist approach abortion"

Its pretty simple if you don't day dream and get bored.. in the exam it requires little intelligence or 'working out'..just regurgitating information.

XD

happy dayz..

I took philosophy on its own and I loved it. The course content was interesting and I learnt to debate properly... very useful in all of my other subjects.

Hi i am currently taking Philosophy and Ethics on the Edexcel Exam Board spec.
Yes it is an interesting course, but you have to be extremely dedicated to working hard to be able to do well in it, there is so much work to be done and so much of your own study time will be taken up by this subject if you wish to do well in it.
If you are under the impression that the course will be anything like the religious education you have had a high school you are being seriously mislead, in the ethics section you will learn about the different ethical positions in society such as the principles of Utilitarianism, Situation Ethics, Just War Ethics, and The argument between Religion and Morality, you will study the different philosophers such as Jeremy Bentham and Immanuel Kant.

Good Luck in it if you do decide that this is the course for you.

I took Philosophy, on its own, but at my college Philosophy and Ethics (aka RE) is compulsory.

To be honest I enjoyed the Philosophy course more and understood RE better because of it.

Philosophy and Ethics is good if you're considering that sort of thing at university but if you want a really time take philosophy on it's own.

You learn how to argue properly, learn about those wacko philosophers saying the world doesnt exist or that they are in the matrix etc. etc. and it puts the RE bit into perspective.
